The Sens are your classic middle-tier club that is easily good enough to qualify for the playoffs but has very little hope of winning a championship; as a result, oddsmakers are giving Ottawa 35/1 NHL odds on Bodog to win the Stanley Cup. This is your Ottawa Senators 2010-11 preview.
The Sens went through a rather bland season last year, quietly humming to a fifth-place finish in the East before getting bounced by the Penguins. Ottawa was pretty underwhelming in its own end, though most of the blame belongs between the pipes.
Pascal Leclaire and Brian Elliott are solid options in net, but they’re far from elite. The always-injured Leclaire enters 2010 as the starter, but who knows how long that will last; fans are already getting excited for 19-year-old prospect Robin Lehner, which shows you how weak the situation is in goal.
Ottawa made a few moves on the blue line, the most notable one being the addition of Sergei Gonchar. He’ll pair with Chris Phillips on the top unit and be a dynamic power play quarterback for the Senators; Gonchar scored 11 goals and 50 points with the Penguins last season.
At the other end of the ice, Ottawa is counting on a comeback season from Jason Spezza. The talented but oft-maligned forward was nearly run out of town last year despite scoring 57 points in 60 games. Supposed locker room issues aside, it would be foolish to give up on the 27-year-old playmaker; he averaged 90 points per game from 2005-2007.
Will a return to form for Spezza be enough to boost the offense? The Sens were 15th in goal scoring last year and made no significant moves up front. There’s a lot of pressure for some of the usual faces — guys who have failed in the past like Daniel Alfredsson, Alex Kovalev and Spezza — to deliver new results. It seems unlikely.

Monday night’s 7-5 loss in Toronto was a double blow for the New York Yankees as they not only failed to officially clinch a playoff spot – Boston won, so the Yanks’ magic number remains at one – but they also blew a chance to take over first place in the AL East because Tampa Bay lost. New York tries to accomplish both again Tuesday and is a -190 favorite on Bodog’s MLB odds.
Pitcher A.J. Burnett struggled again Monday, allowing seven runs in 2 1/3 innings, and there’s talk he might be the odd man out in a playoff rotation. The Yankees’ starters overall are just 2-10 with a 5.19 ERA in the past 23 games. New York is not exactly rolling heading into the postseason as it has lost five of its past six games and is just 26-24 in the past 50.
New York’s ace, CC Sabathia (20-7, 3.26), gets the call on Tuesday night – his ERA is 5.06 in the past four starts. Somehow this is his first start against the Jays this season. Sabathia has pitched against the Blue Jays once in each of the three previous seasons, winning each time, with a 2.57 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 21 innings. Let’s see if he pitches around Jays outfielder Vernon Wells, who has seven homers and 19 RBIs against New York this season – the most homers and RBIs of any player against the Yanks this year.
The Jays, who are 9-7 against New York this season, go with rookie Kyle Drabek (0-2, 4.91), who was a big piece in the deal that sent Roy Halladay to Philadelphia.

The Atlanta Braves’ 2-1 win over the Florida Marlins on Monday night coupled with San Diego’s 1-0 home loss to the Chicago Cubs gave the Braves the NL wild-card lead by a half-game over the Padres, although San Diego has a game in hand. Atlanta is -178 on Bodog’s MLB odds for Tuesday’s game with Florida.
Atlanta is going to push starting pitchers Tim Hudson and Derek Lowe over the next few days as both will start on three days' rest during this last week. The Braves needed to adjust their rotation because Jair Jurrjens is still slowed by a sore right knee.
Hudson (16-9, 2.80) starts tonight against the Marlins on short rest and he wasn’t good last time out, allowing six runs and seven hits in on 5 2/3 innings in a loss at Washington. He has lost four of five starts this month with a 6.10 ERA, while serving up two homers in each of his last three games. Hudson is 9-3 with a 2.91 ERA in his career against Florida. He is now lined up to start the season-finale as well.
The Braves did suffer a key injury in Monday’s win. Third baseman Martin Prado suffered a hip pointer and could be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season. Prado, a first-time All-Star this season, is hitting .307 with 15 homers and 66 RBIs. Brooks Conrad is expected to take Prado's place at third base.
The Marlins, who have lost four of five, will start Anibal Sanchez (12-11, 3.60), who has lost his last two starts with a 7.84 ERA. He also was roughed up last time out, allowing five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of an 8-3 loss at Milwaukee on Thursday.

The San Francisco Giants are in a brutal battle with the San Diego Padres for the NL West; the Giants have a narrow one-game lead, but they’ll get a chance to expand it when they host the Diamondbacks on Bodog’s MLB odds Tuesday.
Jonathan Sanchez (11-9, 3.16 ERA) will get the call for San Francisco. That’s fantastic news for Giants fans, as the southpaw has been absolutely phenomenal over his last five outings; Sanchez allowed just three earned runs (five total runs). He was sharp despite taking the loss against the Cubs in his most recent start, allowing just two runs (only one earned) over 5.2 innings. Sanchez also has 31 strikeouts in 24.2 innings in September.
Sanchez has been brilliant against Arizona this season, going 1-0 with a tiny 1.80 ERA in two starts — though he didn’t last more than five innings in either start. Still, it’s a big improvement over his career numbers against the Diamondbacks; Sanchez is 5-6 with a 4.71 ERA in 17 career appearances (14 starts) against Arizona.
Arizona will send Rodrigo Lopez (7-14, 5.04 ERA) to the hill. The right-hander has been much improved in September, going 2-2 with a 3.70 ERA in four starts. He picked up a win in his last outing despite a rocky effort, allowing four runs in five innings to Colorado.
Lopez has been awful against San Francisco this season, which is saying something considering the club’s struggles to score. The righty is 0-1 with a brutal 7.88 ERA in three starts vs. the Giants in 2010. That matches pretty closely to Lopez’s career numbers against San Fran, as he’s 0-2 with a 7.46 ERA in five career starts.
San Francisco and Arizona have met 15 times this year; the Diamondbacks won 10 of those matchups.

For the fourth time in a row the Philadelphia Phillies have won the National League East title, clinching the top spot in a Monday night victory over the Washington Nationals.
What’s fitting for the Phillies is that they did so with pitcher Roy Halladay on the mound. Halladay pitched a two-hit complete game, earning his 21st win of the season. When the Phillies officially head into the NLDS they’ll show Halladay something he hasn’t yet experienced in his 13-year career; the post-season.
Though the Atlanta Braves pressed hard for most of the season, the 2008 champions proved that the title was to remain in Pennsylvania. With 3/1 odds of winning the World Series, according to the Bodog Sportsbook, fans in Philadelphia must be looking forward to October.
More specifically, they must be looking forward to a rematch with the 2009 champion New York Yankees (11/4 odds of winning the World Series), who defeated them handedly last fall.
Not all is lost for the Braves, however, as they sit just 0.5 games behind the San Diego Padres. If either they, or the current NL West-leading San Fransisco Giants slip up in the final stretch of the season, we might see the Braves look to reclaim the division in a first-round match up with the Phillies.
With post-season baseball right around the corner, it’s time to get into routine betting on MLB. With team props, odds and futures, Bodog Sportsbook has all you need to get started. Think the Phillies will retake their 2008 title? Or will a repeat-seeking New York squad stop them in their tracks. Bet now.
